Protection criteria

Awareness of both the value and the fragility of natural landscapes dates back to the mid-19th century.

Listing provides a high level of protection, reflecting a commitment to maintaining the site strictly in its current state; this does not preclude management or enhancement. The management of listed sites is defined for each site according to its specific characteristics, considering the aim of reconciling progress, traditional activities and heritage preservation through a policy of consultation with the relevant stakeholders.

Listing affirms the recognition of the exceptional qualities of natural sites and monuments, which constitute a vital part of our natural and cultural heritage, just as much as listed historic monuments.
